Premium Fujian Tea
Fujian Province is home to some of the most famous teas in China. These
range from exceptionally fine oolongs, to delicately scented green teas.
What isn't so well appreciated outside China is that Fujian also produces
some wonderful premium quality black teas. Listed here are some of the special
Fujian teas we have selected from this region. They represent some of the best
gongfu grades available this year.
China Black
Chinese black teas are indeed various shades of red. A spectrum of colour
ranging from sparkling coppery tints to the more intense burgundies. The teas
are normally accompanied by floral & fruity flavours. Almost always mellow with
moderate astringency & full on the palate, (a flavour profile very much unlike
the Indian black teas). The provinces of China noted for their gongfu style tea
are located in central & southern regions. Anhui, Sichuan and Yunnan making the most
outstanding teas. While other regions grow and process black teas few rarely make
it to the international scene. A noteworthy list would include; Hubei in central
China making the 'burnt' Hubei Black. Yixing to the east with their rarely seen
Yixing Black: a tea noted for its rich flavour & sour-dry aftertaste. Hunan,
which manufactures what might be described as the definitive Chinese black tea
export: soft & fruity palate with a dazzling depth of redness. Guangdong
province in the south has a relatively well-known kind of black tea called, Ying-de.
A tea previously exported to continental Europe. Close by there's Fujian with its
many specialty gongfu blacks. Lapsang Souchong from Wuyi Shan perhaps being the most
famous (although this pine-smoked leaf is often made from oolong). Scarcely seen
kinds of tea are made on the island of Hainan. The Hainan Blacks are big leaf teas
possessing mildly astringent flavours. But, as good as these Chinese black teas are,
in terms of flavour and original character, towering above all are the highland
grown teas of Anhui and Yunnan. Receiving most attention from international
commentators are those teas grown at Qimen (Anhui), producing Qi Hong, or Keemun,
& Menghai (Yunnan) with the Dian Hong Cha. The latter distinguished by its big-golden
leaves.

WHITE PEONY
WHITE PEONY or BAI MU DAN is perhaps the most versatile of all teas, and is the reason why it can be listed
here as a "black" tea. This fascinating tea can be drunk either as a "green" tea,
an "oolong" tea or a "black" tea, depending on what temperature water you choose
to use, and how long the leaves are infused. In dry leaf the tea has a rather
mottled appearance, possessing a combination of tips, broken leaf and larger
unbroken leaf in colours ranging from white to dark green and ochre. It has a
remarkable sweet, "dusty" muscatel scent, which carries through in the beverage.
When infused with water at 90 degrees C (194F) for 45 seconds to 1 minute,
the tea is a yellow-green colour with a sweet, lifted nose and a light
refreshing mouth feel. Infused for slightly longer at 95 deg.C the tea
acquires an almost oolong quality. Most interesting of all is when the
leaf is treated as a black tea & infused for 2 to 3 minutes using freshly
boiled water - the resulting beverage has a medium red-chestnut colour and
the tea is remarkably similar to a fine Darjeeling!
WHITE PEONY or BAI MU DAN: 100g (3.53oz) $9.55.

FUJIAN GOLD NEEDLE
FUJIAN GOLD NEEDLE is a top grade black tea from Fujian Province.
In dry leaf the tea has narrow shiny pointed black leaves with touches of gold,
& gives of a rich toasty/nutty aroma which is very appealing. When infused for
3 minutes using freshly drawn boiled water, the resulting beverage has an
intense black "sparkling" colour, with pleasing mouth feel and lifted malty
aromas. This is a very fine black tea & it will happily take milk and or sugar
if so desired. Makes superior breakfast tea!
FUJIAN GOLD NEEDLE 200g (7.06oz) $14.95.

BLACK ROSE
BLACK ROSE MEI HUA is no delicate flower, but rather a rich black tea
from Fujian Province infused with
exquisite sweet "mei hua" or rose blossoms & rose essence. The variety of rose used
has been specially bred to be blended with Fujian tea. This is undoubtedly an outstanding
addition to our scented tea range, and offers a generously flavoured & somewhat
exotic tea for all fine tea drinkers. The base black tea used in this rose blend is of high
quality & produces a deep black infusion which has a natural sweetness, without
any bitterness. The rose blossoms used are famous throughout China for their
sweet aroma and deep pink petals. An exceptional herbal-black tea for after-dinner
BLACK ROSE MEI HUA 200g (7.06oz) $12.95.

BLACK JASMINE
BLACK JASMINE selected by G&S is a deeply flavoured Fujian black tea, infused with
jasmine blossoms. The teamen in Fujian Province are famed for their ability to
make quality flower-scented teas, and the Black Jasmine is a fine example of
their tea producing skills. Most "jasmine" teas are made using a green tea base,
but this tea caters to the black tea drinker who would like to try the combination
of jasmine with a premium black tea. The jasmine influence is quite subdued here,
so this tea would suit the black tea drinker looking for a more subtle scented tea
BLACK JASMINE 200g (7.06oz) $7.95.
