Jasmine tea (Chinese pin yin name Mo Li Hua Cha) is known throughout the world
for its refreshing
and fragrant character. The tea favoured in China is a melange of green tea with the
fragrances of jasmine flower (although black tea and oolong jasmines are also
manufactured). The
quality of all such perfumed teas depends on the grade of the base tea as well as the
quality of the scenting. The finest jasmine teas are manufactured in the south
of China (in particular in Fujian Province), although today considerable production of
high quality jasmine teas occurs in Zhejiang
Province to the north, and in Hunan and Anhui Provinces. Methods of
production vary considerably with region, but
basically involve blending of pan-fried green teas with flowers of jasmine.
Sometimes blossom is directly mixed with the tea, other techniques require the
use of scenting stacks. To get the perfuming right, blending occurs at night,
using specific proportions of tea to blossom. It's a highly skilled operation!
Gray & Seddon have secured stocks of two exceptionally fine
Mo Li Hua Cha, each with its own distinctive characteristics. A Hunan tea
called Jasmine Bloom and an Anhui Jasmine, Long Xu. Ideal introductions
to the better Jasmine green teas.

JASMINE BLOOM
A most pleasant introduction to better quality
Jasmine tea
Origin: Hunan Province, Jasmine Bloom is a fine blossom-mixed leaf with a
medium green tea flavour and sweet jasmine flower perfume.
This is a
generous tea that will
readily give multiple, aromatic infusions. As with other good green teas, the Jasmine
Bloom should only be infused for a very short time
for each infusion, and made with water which has been allowed to cool from boiling
temperature.
JASMINE PEARLS One of Yunnan's premium Green Jasmines
This wonderfully fragrant green jasmine tea is from Yunnan Province. The name reflects the fact that the tea is rolled into small
"pearls" of about 1/4 inch diameter. The beverage is quite delicate, being superbly complemented by an unusually sweet jasmine fragrance, which
is not the least cloying or overpowering. This is a jasmine tea on a par with our Anhui Dragon's Beard. Highly recommended.

JASMINE TIPS GREEN TEA
Origin: Yunnan Province, Jasmine Tips is a long leafed green tea carefully blended with high quality jasmine blossoms.
This is a "mid strength" flavoursome tea that will produce several aromatic infusions. As with other good green teas, the Jasmine
Tips should only be infused for a very short time, although it is more forgiving of over over-brewing than the Jasmine Bloom (see below).
It should be prepared with water which has been allowed to cool from boiling temperature. This is a most pleasant introduction to better quality
Jasmine tea, without the hefty price tag.
BLACK JASMINE
Gray & Seddon's Black Jasmine is a rich black tea from Fujian Province, infused with
jasmine blossoms. The teamen in Fujian Province are famed for their ability to make
quality flower-scented teas. And Black Jasmine
is a fine example of their tea producing skills. Most "jasmine" teas
are made using a green tea base, but this tea caters to the black tea drinker
who would like to try the combination of jasmine with a quality black tea.
The jasmine influence is quite subdued here, so this tea would suit the black
tea drinker looking for a more subtle scented tea.
