The stone-makers' art of errors
The Japanese have great admiration for pottery art & the skills that form
stoneware articles. Imperfections & accidental effects that occur during
creation, whether by hand or in the kiln, are welcomed. They are a sure sign
of the maker's workmanship. Although it is widely appreciated that early
Japanese pottery culture was influenced by Chinese and Korean potters, who
helped to found the great porcelain centres at the start of the Edo period,
the history of Japanese stoneware pottery is much longer dating to the Jomon
period (2500-250BC). Several ancient stoneware potteries are recognized for
their art. Seto, Tokoname, Bizen & Shigaraki are but four.
